Nepal has made continued progress in expanding access to education, but significant challenges remain. As of 2024/25, student retention to grade 8 increased to 86.5%, but completion rates declined to 66.9% for grade 10 and just 40.6% for grade 12. Net enrollment at the basic level fell slightly from 95.1% to 94.4%, which may be linked to changing demographics and internal migration.
Challenges in Quality and Equity
Many students, especially in rural and marginalized communities, still face barriers such as poor school infrastructure, lack of trained teachers, and outdated teaching methods. Gender and socioeconomic disparities continue, with female literacy at around 70% compared to 86% for males. Similarly, rural literacy rates remain lower than urban areas, highlighting inequality in educational access and quality.
Steps Toward Improvement
Despite the challenges, Nepal has taken promising steps. New initiatives focus on improving adult literacy, integrating digital learning, updating the national curriculum, and expanding access to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education. Investments in infrastructure and teacher training are also underway. However, long-term progress will depend on consistent policy, sustainable funding, and active community participation.
